Curriculum

The curriculum at FCJ College derives from the FCJ's Vision and Mission statement. The curriculum is broadly based and designed to encourage the highest standard of achievement in all pursuits undertaken by students. We provide the opportunity for each student to achieve personal excellence from Years 7-12, opening the way for further education and training opportunities or entry into the workplace.

English

English is studied as a compulsory core subject from Years 7-12.
Our aim is to develop functional literacy skills amongst students including spelling, grammar, comprehension, essay writing, debating, public speaking and critical analysis. In senior years students may further develop their English skills by studying English Literature.

Mathematics

Mathematics is a core subject in our curriculum during Years 7-10. Year 10 mathematics classes are streamlined to allow further enhancement of skill for VCE classes and also provide additional support for students grasping the basics. During the senior years students may choose from a range of subjects to meet further education course requirements or workplace requirements including:
General Maths Units 1-2 Foundation Maths Units 1-2
Further 11/Maths Units 3-4 Maths Methods Units 1-4 Specialist Maths Units 3-4

Religion

Religion is a compulsory subject for all students attending FCJ College as it represents the very fabric of our existence.
Modern day Religious Education is a blend of traditional teachings and current social issues. Students are presented information challenging them to explore and critique social trends with a view to developing their own Christian faith. We encourage development of social justice values and an involvement in the College and wider community.
Students in Years 7-10 study Personal Development while students in Year 11 study Religion & Society Unit 1 (Diversity) while Year 12 students complete Unit 2 (Ethics).
Students completing their VCE may choose to study Religion & Society Units 3/4 in which case they do not undertake the usual study for their year level.

Our music area provides space for active group participation during lessons, Concert Band performances, practice rooms and private lessons. This area will be further developed in years to come.

Drama

Drama students in Year 9 & 10 can choose drama as an elective, while senior students can elect to study Drama as a VCE subject

Language Other Than English

Study of a second language to Year 8 is compulsory.
Much of the FCJ Order, including our Foundress, has strong ties with France. This is but one reason why we choose to study French as our second language.
The French language, culture and traditions are renown and French is the third most spoken language in the world.
Employment opportunities for students may be enhanced with knowledge of a popular second language. Many students choose to travel on completion of their education and knowledge of a second language is invaluable.
Students studying a language at VCE level receive bonus marks on their score.
Study of Society and Environment - Business/Commerce
In junior and middle years Study of Society and Environment is a combination of Geography, History, Asian Studies and Commerce.

At Year 10 many students choose to further enhance their knowledge in this area by studying subjects in this field at the VCE level.

Duke of Edinburgh Program

Outdoor Education & Environmental Studies Units 1-4
Physical Education classes of a practical nature are compulsory for year 7 to 10 students. Physical Education theory is taught at VCE level.

Carnivals for athletics and swimming are run each year with students competing in their respective Houses (Davy, D'Houet or Hughes). We encourage all students to be active, to enjoy physical activity and to contribute to House spirit.

The Duke of Edinburgh Program is available to our Year 10 students while VCE Outdoor Education may be chosen as a course of study from Years 11-12.
Outdoor Education is an area of study enjoyed by a growing number of students. Students participate in outdoor activities ranging from trekking, canoeing, cross country skiing, overnight camps and visits to marine environments.
